Teacher Reflections: Holiday Market Success!

Queen Bee Holiday Market

by Camie Dyess

Amidst the holiday shopping hustle and bustle, students from Design39Campus in Poway, CA took advantage of a wonderful learning opportunity by participating in the popular handmade fair called Queen Bee Market at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Speak Nice Co. sprouted from the need of spreading kindness through inspirational hard enamel pins. This year, the students introduced a line of tote bags in the same vein. Speak Nice Co. consists of kid-trepreneurs in 3rd and 4th grade who are not only interested in learning the ins and outs of running a business but also to create a lasting impact in the world. Their participation in Queen Bee Market was the first time in the history of the market where kids were invited to sell, side by side, with adult vendors.

Aside from the excitement sparked by selling products they designed, members of Speak Nice Co. got the opportunity to apply core academic concepts learned in school to real life. Students conducted sales, providing the correct change to customers, experimenting with different ways to draw customers to the booth, and using the chip reader for credit card transactions.

At the end of the day, for the kids in Speak Nice Co. the real reward was the feedback only selling to customers in person could provide. What about the profits? Well, that’s just icing on the cake.
