Google Features Wicked Soap Company!

Awesome news! Google recently visited Matt Martin and the Wicked Soap Company at High Tech High Media Arts to highlight their student-run business and all of the exciting ways that students have been engaged and inspired because of it. As a part of the It Takes a Teacher campaign, Google has been highlighting Matt and his students for their non-traditional approach to learning and hands-on approach.

It Takes a Teacher was started by Google to celebrate how technology and the teachers behind it are creating vibrant learning experiences in the classroom. The campaign highlights teachers that inspire their students by thinking out of the box. Only four teachers were selected to be featured across the country, and it’s no surprise that Google chose EdCorp extraordinaire Matt Martin to join the ranks.

Matt, our brave guinea pig teacher, partnered with the Real World Scholars team in early 2015. With students taking the lead, his chemistry class transformed a soap making project into the Wicked Soap Company. Running the project as a business introduced elements of entrepreneurship into the chemistry class like financial planning, marketing their products, sales, product development and product photography. Students have had the opportunity to pursue things they’re individually passionate about, learn real world skills, connect with their community through strategic partnerships and support causes on the HTH campus. In his 14 years of teaching, Matt says that he “has never seen [his] students more engaged in the classroom.” Using business as a teaching tool has meant more engaged students (quite a feat for high school sophomores) who can see the fruits of their labor in the real world.

It is beyond inspiring to see Matt and his students recognized for all their hard work. As the first EdCorp, students in the Wicked Soap Company crafted what it meant to run a business in the classroom. It takes a teacher to push the boundaries of what a classroom can be and engage students in ways that brings learning to life. We are so grateful to have partnered with such an incredible teacher willing to take such a big risk with his classroom. Thank you Google for supporting teachers like Matt and congratulations Wicked Soap Company!
